The (CT, or computerized axial tomography) scanner uses x-rays in a movement of rotation around the patient in order to obtain very precise cut images. The information is then processed by computer and images with numerous different angles, like axial, coronal, sagittal or 3D are obtained. The axial scan is indicated for the following investigations: Brain – lumbar spine- facial bones- sinus – neck, ENT– Thorax – Abdomen pelvis – osteo –articulator – virtual coloscopy – dental implants Blood vessels (angio-CT carotids, Willis (aneurism), aorta and lungs). A contrast agent could be used (oral or intravenous) to augment the sensitivity of the exam depending on the findings required and the clinical information. For instance, the search or characterization of hepatic lesion(s) will require an intravenous contrast.
